Course contents
The BA programme Social and Cultural Anthropology (SCA) involves humans in their social relationships and in various cultural contexts. The objective of the SCA bachelor's programme is discipline-specific, cultural science- and social science-based academic job preparation. Graduates of this programme are able to work independently and in teams to theoretically and practically address intercultural problems and to implement concrete solutions. An indispensable educational goal is the acquisition of competencies specific to the anthropological field of empirical investigation methods. Particular emphasis is given to the three core elements: ethnographic research with participatory observation in the local language, ethnohistoric analysis, and systematic cultural and social anthropological comparison.
Professional fields for trained social and cultural anthropologists are particularly focused in the fields of development cooperation, refugee work and migrant counselling, tourism, cultural mediation, museums, and diversity management. Possible employers include, amongst others, businesses, NGOs and public institutions that interact to a large extent with individuals in various cultural contexts.
Duration and scope
The workload for the SCA bachelor's programme amounts to 180 ECTS credits, which corresponds to a programme duration of six semesters. 1 ECTS credit is synonymous with a workload of 25 hours.
Structure
The SCA bachelor's programme is structured as follows:
- Introductory and orientation phase (StEOP 15 ECTS)
- Foundational phase (52 ECTS)
- Development phase (53 ECTS)
- Intensification phase, during which two bachelor theses must be written (30 ECTS)
- Extension curricula (30 ECTS)
Modules with a combined total of 150 ECTS must be completed in the context of the SCA course offerings. The 30 ECTS credits for extension curricula are comprised of one to two extension curricula or alternative extensions.
The positive completion of StEOP is a requirement for further study.
